The day centre this week launches its supporting volunteering initiative which provides service users with opportunities to volunteer at the centre while receiving coaching and mentoring as means of support. Fr Hugh McGinlay, Assistant Priest at St Andrew's Cathedral Glasgow and Chaplain to the day centre sadly died on 13th March 2008 at the Marie Curie hospice in Springburn, Glasgow. Fr Hugh had worked as Chaplain at the day centre since 2004 providing pastoral support to service users and staff and promoting the day centre and its work at a wider level. Hugh brought a remarkable ability to touch people's lives to his work at the centre. He listened empathically to those he worked with and in sharing his own story and vulnerabilities and his humour with us, he brought inspiration and hope to the Wayside. He will be sadly missed.

25th Birthday Celebration
The Day Centre, founded in 1982, is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. We wil be marking the occasion by providing a meal and entertainment for service users on Tuesday 7th August and at a special event for staff and volunteers on Friday 10th August.

03 May 2007 - National Lottery Award
In May 2007, the day centre was awarded a grant from the National Lottery to enable it to expand its Skills Development Project. The Lottery will provide funding to enable us to meet the cost of;

• recruiting 1.5 Skills Development staff
• training delivered by external providers
• equipment and materials
• foodstuffs for a healthy eating buffet
• participants' travel expenses

Securing funding to meet these costs will enable the project to:

• Promote greater digital inclusion through the delivery of IT access and learning opportunities
• Deliver life skills training
• Develop a supported volunteering initiative for service users
• Deliver individual guidance to assist personal and professional development
• Facilitate access to external/mainstream education, employment, training and volunteering opportunities
• Provide a healthy eating buffet to meet nutritional needs and encourage engagement
• Provide travel costs for participants

The project will begin in August 2007 and is funded until July 2010.

23 April 2007 - 1st Issue of the Wayside Newsletter
Congratulations to the Wayside Newsletter Group on their production of the first issue of the new Wayside News! We hope to have future editions of the newsletter available online.

16 November 2006 - Strategic Review of Wayside Centre
The day centre is currently undergoing an organisational review which will identify its strengths and weaknesses and make recommendations for changes to enable the organisation to function more effectively. The review is being led by Kinharvie Institute of Facilitation - www.kinharvie.org uk - and should be concluded before the end of 2006.
